KOSHER CHIXXX @ SLIPPER ROOM: 4/4/9 @ 7:30PM.

The Big Apple's juiciest Jewesses will strut their tuchuses in a special, extremely Reform pre-Passover edition of this burlesque revue.  Downtown diva (and Associate Editor of Heeb magazine) Raven Snook presides over stripteases and sketches by the irreverent Little Brooklyn, ravishing Delirium Tremens, and New York's one and only Schlep Sisters—sassy Darlinda Just Darlinda, and the almost wholesome Minnie Tonka.

KILLER OF SHEEP AT THE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE, 4/3/09 AT 7PM.

For a film that was declared a national treasure by the Library of Congress, its viewership is pretty measly.  Killer of Sheep, a film by Charles Burnett, is often described as an American neo-realistic classic; a depiction of African-American culture that is simultaneously elegant in its reflection and abrasive through its honesty.

LA FAMIGLIA DIMITRI @ THE NEW VICTORY THEATRE: THROUGH 4/19/9

So your kids want to go to the circus. The big circus, the real circus, the one being advertised all over the subway with clowns and tigers and such. Fair enough. But unlike your 7 year-old, you read that Times article from a few years back about how man's encroachment on their feeding grounds is driving elephants to what can only be described as belligerent, violent behavior against people, rhinos, and other elephants. Makes you wonder how they'd respond to being chained, transported, and paraded in front of thousands of loud, smelly people with flash cameras every day. Hmmm.

UNEMPLOYMENT OLYMPICS @ TOMPKINS SQUARE PARK: TUESDAY, 3/31/9 @ 1:30PM.

Okay, maybe you have been laid off. That doesn't mean you get to become a slothful waste of flesh who just sits around staring at Diff'rent Strokes re-runs all day. Nope. You need to get out there and show the world that you can still compete.

PUBLIC-READING-FRIENDLY POETRY READING @ MCNALLY JACKSON: 3/30/9 @ 7PM.

Poetry readings can be risky.

you might
get a poet
who reads
their work
in small,
albeit pretentious
blocks of
words, in a
faraway
voice...

OLA PRESENTS BENEFIT PERFOMANCE OF THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES IN SPANISH, 3/28/09 AT 7PM.

Eve Ensler’s renowned compilation of monologues will greet the Latino Community of the Hamptons this Saturday in a Spanish rendition of the famed collection. The show is being performed with the hopes that the monologues’ V-Day message, a global movement to stop violence against women, will reach Latin communities in Long Island.

TELL THE STATE LEGISLATURE THAT WE WANT PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE DEPOSITS!

People have been trying to get the New York State government to include plastic water bottles in our Bottle Bill, the legislation that decides which containers have deposits and which don't, for years. The Legislature and Governor have finally agreed to make that Poland Spring bottle in your bag refundable, making it more likely to be recycled. But rumor has it that the Senate is backing away from the deal. That's where you come in.

ROBBI K & FRIENDS BRING WORLD MUSIC TO THE KIDS, 3/29/09 AT 11AM.

Robbi K is a renowned children’s musician who has performed with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Chaka Kahn and Aretha Franklin.
With her husband, South African bassist Bakithi Kumalo, they will present a show of storytelling in multiple languages and singing that will move children and adults alike.  For an added bonus, their performance is interactive getting the young-ins to sing, clap and giggle with joy.  Your kids will beam.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS KIDS SHOW AT LE POISSON ROUGE, 3/28/09 AT 3PM.

They Might Be Giants is an adult band with a child’s soul.  Their lyrics display thematic depth while their pop sounds make it all seem surreal.  They are whimsical and wonderful, and remind me very much of The Little Prince.  Thus, it is completely understandable how they are tailor-made for a children’s concert.

JULES DASSIN RETROSPECTIVE @ FILM FORUM: 3/27/9—4/7/9

Jules Dassin got his start as an actor in New York's Yiddish theater scene, back in the 30's. He eventually found his way to MGM and became a successful—if creatively constrained—director. He was blacklisted as a former Communist by fellow director Edward Dmytryk; he ended up making the best films of his career while exiled in Europe.

A BAROQUE BASH AT THE GALAPAGOS ART SPACE, SATURDAY 3/28 AT 8PM.

On Saturday, March 28th the magnificence of 1770 Paris will collide with the multifarious tastes of New York nightlife at the Galapagos Art Space in Dumbo at The Return of Rococo Party: A  Baroque Bash.

JOIN THE SOHO ALLIANCE TO STOP YET ANOTHER BIG BUILDING IN SOHO. MEETING TONIGHT AT THE SOHO GRAND, 6:30 PM.
