STOP NYU EXPANSION: A LETTER FROM ANDREW BERMAN.

The GVSHP gathered over 200 letters which we will deliver to Mayor Bloomberg, NYU President Sexton, local elected officials, community boards, and members of the NYU Community Task Force saying that NYU must abide by its commitments to seek locations outside of our neighborhood if it is to expand, and seek to re-use buildings rather than demolish them.  We need to keep that momentum going!

Step right up.  Come on in.  Pop-Up Shop is a traveling boutique and so much more.  Along with its fabulous sales— that includes consignment designer clothes, tween fashions, and handmade jewelry— but it also features consultations with fitness and medical experts. 


SUMMER PICKS: OSO BRUNCH PARTY AT SOUTHAMPTON INN.

Every Sunday OSO of the Southhampton Inn will be throwing a brunch bash including DJ Derrick Reason, swimming pool, summertime cocktails, tapas and more.

RISING ENDORSEMENT FOR DA CANDIDATE RICHARD ABORN.

Richard Aborn, first time candidate for Manhattan District Attorney, forged his reputation as the progressive candidate and in New York City that holds weight.   His supporters include the Working Families Party, the Gay & Lesbian Independent Democrats (GLID), and the 504 Democratic Club, a New York City-based coalition of Democrats working towards inclusion of people with disabilities in the political and social fabric of society.
 

EARTHTALK: BIRTH CONTROL IN THE WATER?

Is there any truth to the rumor about high levels of birth control chemicals being found in some cities’ drinking water? If so can these be filtered out?  

ELISA LENDVAY’S “FORCE OF THINGS” AT V&A

V&A is pleased to present Force of Things – a solo exhibition of sculpture, and drawings by Elisa Lendvay. 

The term Force of Things alludes to circumstance and the powers beyond our control that exist in nature and human nature, and matter that surround us.

EARTHTALK: THE FATE OF OLD MATTRESSES.

How can I recycle my old mattress if the place I buy a new one from doesn’t take it? What do mattress companies do with old mattresses when they do take them? Do they recycle any of the material?

Help!  Coney Island is in peril!  The historic site, once a hedonistic playground and a haven for social outsiders, is now in danger of being debased to a collection of high rises.  The city’s current rezoning plan would allow towers up to 27 stories tall to permeate the heart of Coney Island’s central amusement district.  If this happens, Coney Island, once so full with charisma, would be reduced to just a caricature of its former self.

AICIA TO BE FEATURED IN “FRAGMENT: ART IN THE PARK & THE NOLITA ART WALK.”

Japanese born artist Aica grew up drawing family portraits on the back of her father’s electrical engineering blueprints.  In Osaka, the city where she grew up, high rises and factories were tempered with rich cultural traditions.  Very much the product of her culture, Aicia draws inspiration from animae and manga.  However unlike other Japanese artists who portray such forms as dark, Aica’s works tend to be subtle and hopeful.
