“DESIGN FOR A LIVING WORLD” PREMIERS AT THE NATIONAL DESIGN MUSEUM: 5/13/09.
Ten renown and visionary designers from the worlds of fashion, industrial and home design have participated in this extraordinary exhibition showcasing objects made entirely from sustainable, natural materials.
Yves Béhar, Stephen Burks, Hella Jongerius, Maya Lin, Christien Meindertsma, Abbott Miller, Isaac Mizrahi, Ted Muehling, Paulina Reyes for Kate Spade and Ezri Tarazi have used their expertise to prove that functional can be fashionable. Mizrahi utilizes salmon leather in his infamous designs, Ted Muehling creates precious jewels with farmed black pearls and vegetable “ivory” and Paulina Reyes created innovative handbags made with sustainable woods, cotton and jipijapa (a fiber made of palm leaves).
Hosted by the Nature Conservancy and the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, the National Design Museum will host a preview reception Wednesday May 13th. It’s worth a viewing.
