Board Decides to Close St. Vincent's Hospital— Rally Today, 11AM.
Last night the Board of Directors of Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center (SVCMC) voted to close their hospital inpatient operations. This saddens many whom have been fighting diligently to keep emergency and vital health care services on the west side on Manhattan. Here is a letter from Community Board #2 Chair Jo Hamilton:
Dear Neighbor:
It is with great sadness and regret that I write to inform you that last night the Board of Director's for St. Vincent's Hospital voted to close their inpatient services. Community Board 2 and our St. Vincent’s Omnibus Committee have been in contact with our elected officials about this issue and are assured that every effort will be made to ensure that this closing happens in an orderly and responsible manner.
St. Vincent's has served Greenwich Village and the downtown neighborhoods in an outstanding manner for the past 160 years. We thank them for their care and devotion. The Governor's Task Force will continue to work to find solutions to continue their mission to provide outpatient and urgent care services.
The Community Board would like to thank all of our elected officials - Governor Paterson, Speaker Quinn, Congressman Nadler, Borough President Stringer, State Senator Duane, Assemblymember Glick, and all of the others - who have worked tirelessly since the inception of this crisis to try to find a way to maintain an appropriate level of health care for all those who live and work in our district.
There will be a rally today, Wednesday, April 07, at 11 a.m. outside of St. Vincent’s at 12th Street and 7th Avenue to urge the State not to approve any St. Vincent’s closure plan until there is an appropriate urgent healthcare option for the West Side. We urge you to attend.
We will continue to do all we can to help our elected officials and the Task Force in their efforts - and we will continue to keep you informed."
Sincerely,
Jo Hamilton
Chair, Community Board 2, Manhattan
