CB #2 HEARING ON PROPOSED MOVING OF GREENWICH VILLAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL

An important notice from Community Board #2:

The second hearing on the proposal to move Greenwich Village Middle School (GVMS) to 26 Broadway is on Wednesday, November 4, 6 p.m., at the Broadway Education Complex, 26 Broadway (at Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan).

Because this is the final hearing (unfortunately, not well-publicized) it is crucial the community turn out to voice our opinions.

GVMS must be moved by the fall of 2010. The question is: Is moving to Bowling Green the best solution? Some are concerned that if GVMS is moved downtown, it creates a hole from downtown to Chelsea. We need more middle schools; the Clinton School for Writers & Artists needs a home as well. Others argue that nothing about this move negates the need to turn the State-owned building at 75 Morton Street into a middle school.

CB2 recognizes the urgency of more school seats and is asking your support. Please turn out and have your voice heard.

Local parents have been asking the following questions about the proposed move, which we thought we would share:

.We need a middle school in our area so that there is a local choice.
.The need for more middle school seats is at crisis proportions, by moving GVMS our community’s classroom overcrowding crisis will not be solved – we still need 75 Morton Street.
.Can we have a meaningful impact statement that provides details (e.g., it does not tell us if 26 Broadway has a gym or outdoor space;  will moving to this location crowd the other school that is currently in this location?)
.How much will this move to a private office building cost, as compared to renovating a publicly owned building, such as 75 Morton Street?
