COUNCIL MEMBER JUMAANE D. WILLIAMS & COLLABORATE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
A press release from Council Member Jumaane Williams:
BROOKLYN, NY After a devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti January 12, 2010 at 4:53pm, thousands are left homeless and searching for loved ones amidst the rubble.
"I offer my deepest prayers and sympathy to all the victims in Haiti" says Council Member Williams. "I am working in concert with the Mayor, Speaker Quinn, Council Member Mathieu Eugene, and the National Action Network to identify what supplies and support is most needed now by Haitian earthquake victims."
Those wishing to donate goods and/or money should wait until hearing from elected officials exactly what and where to give. In coordination with major international rescue organizations, Elected Officials will identify exactly what is needed and assure a safe way to get it to those in need. Drop sites will be announced shortly. Additionally the Council Member’s office will soon be able to provide a reputable list of organizations accepting cash donations for victims.
Council Member Williams calls for President Obama to immediately enact the Haitian Protection Act (H.R 144), granting Temporary Protected Status to Haitian immigrants. Additionally we must move forward with immigration reform. “My district has the largest population of Haitians outside of Florida and Haiti. These residents must be able to work in order to assist devastated family members at home”, said Council Member Williams, District 45, Brooklyn, NY.
