DEREK JARMAN'S EARLY FILMS @ ELIZABETH DEE: THROUGH 2/21/9.

Derek Jarman, Sebastian Wrap, 1975. Super-8 (transfer to DVD), color and black and white, 10 minutes.

Derek Jarman was one of Britain's best known experimental filmmakers, respected for short films, music videos (many for the Smiths) and full length features alike. This show at Elizabeth Dee Gallery focuses on his early short films, shot on Super 8 film and possessed of a hazy, surreal quality that expresses emotion through image rather than acting.

The effect is that of stumbling upon home movies of a stranger who had led a very interesting life indeed. Worth checking out.
