A press release for candidate for Attorney General, State Senator Eric Schneiderman:

Leading LGBT Democratic Club Joins Growing List of Endorsements For Lifelong Progressive Democrat Schneiderman

NEW YORK – Citing his record as a lifelong progressive Democrat who has fought for LGBT equality for decades, the Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats (GLID) overwhelmingly voted to endorse Eric Schneiderman for Attorney General. This is the first major endorsement since Schneiderman earned a place on the ballot during the first round of voting at this week’s Democratic Convention.

"In a crowded and competitive field for Attorney General, Eric stands head and shoulders above the other candidates. As a lifelong progressive Democrat, Eric has made our fight his own, toiling with us in the trenches for over two decades. From marriage equality to hate crimes to protecting students from bullying to improving the lives of people with HIV/AIDS, Eric has been one of our greatest advocates - he's stood up for all New Yorkers long before it was politically popular to do so. As New York’s Attorney General, we know Eric will continue to be the same, leading progressive voice he has been his whole life, tirelessly fighting for justice and the concerns of our community. This is an endorsement we are proud to make,” said GLID President Scott Melvin.

“I am so honored to have the overwhelming support of GLID, a group that has been leading the fight for justice and equality for decades. This endorsement is a huge boost to our campaign and means a lot to me personally,” said Eric Schneiderman, a lifelong progressive Democrat who has fought for LGBT equality for decades. “You can count on me to be an Attorney General who never stops fighting for the rights of all New Yorkers. Together, we will deliver equal justice to the people of every corner of this state, without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability.”

Founded in 1974, GLID is New York’s first gay and lesbian Democratic club. Based in New York County, GLID has been an effective force in progressive politics – lobbying elected officials, sponsoring public forums, conducting voter registration drives and boasting an impressive string of victories that have helped lesbians, gay men and other progressives gain political office.

Earlier this month, Eric won the endorsement of Lambda Independent Democrats (LID), Brooklyn’s oldest and largest lesbian and gay organization and one of the state’s largest lesbian and gay political clubs.

With widespread support from a broad and diverse coalition of progressive New Yorkers and the unanimous endorsement of the state’s largest labor union, 1199/SEIU United Healthcare East and the influential 32BJ, momentum is growing for Schneiderman’s campaign to be the state’s next Attorney General.

To date, Eric Schneiderman has won the endorsement of over fifty federal, state and local elected officials including U.S. Representatives Jerry Nadler, Charles Rangel and Jose Serrano, Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson, NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Citizen Action of New York, a host of prominent community activists, and labor unions including the UAW and Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association.
