GAY CITY AND AFM LOCAL 802 BACK ABORN.
NEW YORK- Manhattan DA candidate Richard Aborn today announced two key endorsements: The Gay City News , and the AMF Local 802, the largest local union of professional musicians in the world. This is the union’s first endorsement for District Attorney since it was founded in 1921.
Gay City News , a leading LGBT paper in New York, praised Aborn as “clearly the stand-out reformer in this field….Aborn has also won endorsements from dozens of elected officials in Manhattan, including committed reformers like Congressman Jerrold Nadler and State Senator Eric Schneiderman….This country is weakened by the fact that so many Americans fill too many jails. Criminal justice reform is an urgent need, and as Manhattan district attorney, Richard Aborn can play a singular role in that effort.”
Similarly, AMF Local 802 touted Aborn’s “progressive and effective" vision for preventing crime.
"We know we can count on Richard Aborn to protect workers rights and make sure everyone enjoys equal protection under the law,” Mary Landolfi, President of Local 802, said. “Aborn's undeniable progressive record of results make him far and away the best choice for Manhattan District Attorney."
Local 802 includes the orchestral musicians who perform at Lincoln Center, the Broadway pit musicians, the freelance musicians who perform in the many other musical venues in and around New York, as well as teaching artists.
The endorsements come as Aborn has collected the support of the overwhelming majority of Democratic leaders, activists, and organizations in Manhattan, as well as the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys, Working Families Party, and former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton. Aborn has picked up 17 endorsements by currently elected officials, while no other candidate has more than six. The first-time candidate and national gun control leader has also been endorsed by the most political organizations and grass roots activists.
Aborn has devoted his career to innovative ways of fighting crime the right way. He started his law enforcement career prosecuting violent felonies under Robert Morgenthau. He masterminded the Brady gun control bill - and became the NRA's worst enemy. He was a leader in the expansion of the use of DNA evidence to both convict criminals and exonerate the innocent. As the managing partner of a law firm, he has supervised scores of attorneys. And his independent investigation of the NYPD took on police misconduct and brutality.
