GVSHP MEETING TO DISCUSS RE-ZONING OF FAR WEST VILLAGE, 4/6/9 @ 6:30 PM.

The Far West Village, also known as the C6-1 zone, has been targeted by developers looking to place oversized commercial developments because of its outdated zoning rules. The zoning district, enacted in 1961, encourages “very out-of-scale hotel, dorm, and office development” and last year the district was targeted by a developer who wanted to build a 100 ft. tall hotel.

The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation is co-sponsoring a community meeting to discuss the re-zoning of this historic district, before an alarming precedent is set. The GVHSP has surveyed the area and found multiple sites in the district where the outdated zoning regulations could be abused. The meeting, set for next Monday, will discuss a plan to prevent such developments and to amend the zoning to better protect the community.

Also co-sponsoring the meeting are the Greenwich Village Block Associations, Greenwich Village Community Task Force, Charles St. Block Assoc., Jane St. Block Assoc., Perry St. Block Assoc., Perry St. Crusaders, 135 Perry St. Ownrs’ Corp., 131 Perry St. Apt. Corp., Washington West 11th St. Owners Corp., Waverly Bank 11 Neighbors, West Village Committee, Federation to Preserve the Greenwich Village Waterfront & Great Port, Horatio Block Assoc., Far West 10th Street Block Association, Carmine Street Block Association, Washing. Sq.-Lower Fifth Ave Community Association, and the W. 12th St. Block Association.
