HUDSON RISE END OF YEAR UPDATE— ENDORSING A GREENER, GREATER DOWNTOWN
An update from Realize Hudson Rise:
Over the past summer, Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler and DSNY staff met frequently with the Community Sanitation Steering Committee to work through operational details for the HUDSON RISE PLAN. We have now been asked to reach out to our neighbors uptown to take their “fair share” of sanitation facilities, a necessary step to facilitating a two-district facility on Spring & Washington Streets. We have made some early progress involving Community Boards 4, 5 and 7 in these conversations.
On Thursday, the NYS Supreme Court ruled that Columbia University could not use Eminent Domain powers, a decision which may help us, by emboldening UPS to assert their property rights.
New York City and State Budget negotiations demand serious cuts in vital services and the Mayor and City Council seem to think that tax increases and cuts in education and social services are the only answer...as DSNY capital expenditures sky-rocket! The West 57th District Garage is now three years late and more than $300 MM over budget…paying penalties to the Hudson River Park Trust to extend their stay in the Park.
The Spring Street Garage proposal has doubled in cost since 2007. The community's proposal for a two-district solution, Hudson Rise, will SAVE money…and yet the City refuses any serious negotiation!
Tell District 3 Council Member and the current Speaker Christine Quinn that she needs to represent the best interests of her district...and the city at large!
Use this link to visit Speaker Quinn's Council Home Page and become a "fan" on her Facebook page so you can communicate directly with her about community needs. We need your help!
Please write to our newly elected public officials to ask them to support a two-district solution for our neighborhood:

Dear __________________,
There still is time to realize the community's Hudson Rise design for a Two-District Sanitation Garage at Spring Street. Common sense tells us that this plan will be a better neighbor, save money, minimize diesel truck mileage and provide better delivery of sanitation services to midtown and uptown residents. Please work even more closely in 2010 with the Community Sanitation Steering Committee to find a better solution for a Greener, Greater Downtown!
