MARGARET CHIN RALLIES SUPPORTERS IN CHINATOWN
A press release from City Council candidate Margaret Chin:
Joined by Over 150 Supporters, Garment Workers and Others 8 Days Before Primary Democrat Margaret Chin, who is running for the New York City Council in the 1st district, rallied with over 150 supporters in Lt. Kim Lau square today, just over 1 week before Primary Day. She was joined by the heads of almost 28 family associations, as well as garment and hotel workers.
Margaret Chin thanked the community for their support and for coming out on Labor Day. “We called a Labor Day rally because the workers and the people are strongly behind me” she said, “even though some political groups have endorsed the incumbent. In the next 8 days, we need your help to win this election. On Tuesday, September 15th, we will win.”
Speakers called on Chinatown and District 1 voters to unite behind Margaret as the only Chinese-American candidate on the ballot, and to come out in large numbers next Tuesday. Some also spoke emotionally about the possibility of Chinatown, and district 1, having its first Chinese-American representative in Margaret Chin. It is important for Chinatown’s population to turn out, so that the area gets appropriate government resources and attention.
Margaret was recently endorsed by the Villager and Downtown Express, the major newspapers on the west side of the district. Although they are printed in English and their 150,000 readers are mainly in TriBeCa and SoHo, they noted the importance of finally having Asian-American representation for District 1. Although Unite local 23-25 has endorsed the incumbent for political reasons, the workers at today’s rally said that they are supporting Margaret Chin, and that the people are behind her next Tuesday.
