MARGARET CHIN REACTS TO CB #1 CANDIDATES FORUM.

Reaction from City Council candidate Margaret Chin regarding August 17th’s first candidates’ forum:

Only Female Candidate Addresses Important Issues Facing New Yorkers, Lower Manhattan

Monday's candidates forum highlighted the stark differences between the candidates as Democrat Margaret Chin emerged as the clear frontrunner. Demonstrating a firm grasp of policy issues facing New Yorkers, Margaret Chin vowed to bring her experience as a mother, teacher, and community activist to tackle the difficult issues of education, affordable housing, health care, and labor benefits.

Democrat Margaret Chin has deep roots in the district, having lived and worked in the district for over 4 decades. She also has the backing of CODA (the Coalition for a District Alternative) the political group which helped put a number of elected officials into office, including Councilwoman Rosie Mendez.

“As a mother, teacher, community organizer and activist, I will be that strong voice for families all across our district,” said Democrat Margaret Chin. “After eight years of mediocrity, it is clear that families need an aggressive council member who will be there for constituents, and be a strong voice for our children, seniors, and neighborhoods.”

Democrat Margaret Chin is waging one of the most successful campaigns in recent history. Not only is her campaign providing free legal services for residents in the community (in several languages) but they have registered over 1,000 new voters across the district. Not only is the Chin campaign infrastructure strong, but her fundraising has outpaced all of her opponents. While some of her opponents are mired in debt, Margaret is the most well-financed candidate with 29 days to Election Day.

During the debate, Margaret also stressed that she would provide high quality constituent services, something that many local residents say the incumbent has failed to do. While his office is disorganized, hard to access, and seldom open late, Chin pledged longer hours, better-trained professional staff, and more resources. In fact, her campaign has already been providing constituent services, including a free legal clinic on Saturdays for housing and family law issues, as well as language and other assistance on Wednesdays.

“Our district not only needs aggressive representation, but the New York City Council needs a fresh perspective. It is regrettable that only 17 of 51 members are female, and that even fewer have children in our public schools,” said Margaret Chin. “Do working families really think that our public schools would be in such poor shape if the City Council were populated with teachers and parents instead of lawyers?”
