A "People's Fundraiser" For Julie Menin

This Thursday, Downtown Independent Democrat President, Sean Sweeney is to host the "People's Fundraiser," a cocktail reception for Julie Menin, currently Comunity Board #1 Chair, to support her bid for elected office. Although not officially announced, Menin is expected to be a candidate for Manhattan Borough President in 2013.

Julie is a former small-business owner and regulatory attorney, praised by the New York Times for her "solution driven" and "results oriented" approach.

As Community Board Chair, Menin:
- spearheaded the construction of three new public schools in lower Manhattan, as well as two community centers, a park and a branch library;
- led the effort to move the 9/11 Khalid Sheik Mohammed terror trial from downtown to a more suitable, secure and less disruptive location;
- in promoting religious tolerance, she led the community board to a 29-1 vote in support of the Islamic cultural center;
- and, successfully advocated for millions of dollars from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation for the arts, as well as job-creating infrastructure.

Contributions for this event start at $15 and top out at $175. Further, your contribution will be matched 6 to 1 by the NYC Campaign Finance Board. So, a $50 contribution will be matched with $300, for a total of $350.
