So-Politics: May-Day and Sachs
Apparently the U.S. Attorney has opened a criminal investigation into the Goldman Sachs matter. Now there are 3 (Justice, SEC, US Attorney) separate government inquiries into the operations of the “bank” and more information about fraudulent activities may surface – or not. As the Wall Street blog 24/7 points out, many such inquiries have simply gone away after a few lower-level, “upper” management have been thrown under the bus. Of course, the Wall Street/Banks/Mortgage Broker triage-of-corruption, which has destroyed the economy— only those who accepted mortgage loans are likely to be targeted.
All is not “right” in the Hamptons with the current immigration chaos. Tomorrow a rally is being held in East Hampton to sign up to express some discontent over local media coverage, which tends to be slightly to the right of the John Birch Society, even if disguised as Democrats. While there are many disaffected New Yorkers living in them there parts, especially after 9-11, immigrants (legal or illegal) have a less than cozy feeling peddling along the highways at night.
Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President is celebrating his 39th birthday on May 4th. This perennial big kid with an even bigger political future has more energy than a teenager and his date at a drive-in movie and has his eye on a number of possible positions – anywhere from Mayor to Senator. With the support of some major players like Jerry Nadler, it’s not out of the question.
Jeanne Wilcke has begun reaching out to many downtown cognoscenti after assuming the Presidency of the Downtown Independent Democrats. She takes the reigns of this club from Sean Sweeney (now Treasurer) after years of infighting with some disaffected members. This resulted in two of its District Leaders (David Reck and Linda Belfer) walking off into the sunset to start another club, the Lower Manhattan Democrats.
With the sometimes-questionable efficacy and validity of the Community Boards (which are more reminiscent of political graveyards than community-oriented advocates), the reinvigoration of political organizations is important.
