Speaker Quinn Releases Important Update on Brutal Assault In Clinton/Hell's Kitchen
A press release from Speaker Christine Quinn:
In the early morning hours of Thursday March 11th a woman was brutally attacked by a single perpetrator in a bathroom stall of the Midtown bar Social, located at 795 Eighth Avenue. This evening I along with Councilmember Julissa Ferreras, and Sonia Ossorio, Executive Director of NOW NYC flyered near Social. We handed out over 1,500 flyers with information on this violent crime and a picture of the suspect.
Thanks to everyone's great efforts and the immediate action from the NYPD, the suspect is in custody.
Once the crime was reported, the Midtown North Precinct searched the scene for evidence, as well as investigated video in the facility and surrounding area. Because of the severity of the crime, the NYPD Special Victims Division (SVD) took the lead and canvassed the neighborhood for the perpetrator and distributed information to raise community awareness.
The victim who suffered serious injuries is currently recovering and in stable condition. Detectives are investigating the possibility that the woman was the victim of an attempted sexual assault in connection with the severe injuries she received.
Please take care to keep yourself, your loved ones and your neighbors safe. While sexual assault is never the fault of the victim, the following tips may be useful when walking outside at night:
* When going out in the evening try to walk with a friend; remember there is power in numbers.
* Remain alert; individuals on cell phones or wearing head phones are more susceptible to attack as they may appear distracted.
