UPDATED: Councilmember Chin, Senator Squadron, Borough President Stringer, and Assembly Speaker Silver’s Statement on Fire in Chinatown.

A joint statement from Councilmember Margaret Chin, Senator Daniel Squadron, Borough President Scott Stringer, and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver regarding new information on the 7-alarm fire on Grand Street Sunday night:

"We wanted to provide an update on the now-deadly fire on Grand Street. First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and those injured, and especially with the family of Sing Ho, who died in the fire. We are currently working with City agencies and local community organizations, including Asian Americans for Equality, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, University Settlement - Project Home, the Chinese-American Planning Council, and the Chinatown Partnership, to secure housing for those displaced and help affected small businesses recover from this tragedy. Our thanks go out to the American Red Cross, which is providing housing for the tenants through at least Thursday night. We wanted to take this opportunity to again thank all of the emergency responders, organizations and groups who rushed to provide immediate relief at the scene, including the FDNY, NYPD, DOB, OEM, American Red Cross, Con Edison, DEP, HPD, SBS, the LES CERT and the LES Hatzolah volunteer ambulance corps. In the wake of this tragedy we are once again reminded of the immense courage and generosity of our Lower Manhattan community.”

Monday they said:

"We were saddened by the tragedy [Sunday night and early Monday morning] in Chinatown. The fire that destroyed 2 buildings on Grand street and damaged two others demonstrated yet again the problematic state of housing in Chinatown and the Lower East Side. Our offices have been on site throughout the day, and we are working closely with emergency responders and City agencies. Our urgent priorities are that displaced tenants are relocated and affected small businesses receive assistance during this time, and that moving forward we find ways to replace the affordable housing units lost in this fire. Our offices are available for anyone who needs assistance related to this fire, and will make ourselves available to help out as we asses and respond to the needs of those affected.”
