WORKSHOP FOR MARKET-RATE TENANTS: THE J-51 DECISION— 11/17/09.
This was sent to us by Rob Hollander of Save the Lower East Side:
If you live in a building receiving a J-51 tax abatement, you may be eligible for a rent reduction, a refund, and the legal protections of rent stabilization— if your apartment was illegally deregulated.
To find out if you live in a J-51 building, simply go to this list of all J-51 buildings for your address (for example, if you type "612 EAST 11" into your pdf "find" function, you'll see that it is on the list). You can also go to the link given in the announcement below.
GOLES is presenting a workshop for J-51 tenants this Tuesday at 6:30, Middle Collegiate Church, 50 E 7th St. Here's their announcement:

GOLES (Good Old Lower East Side) is presenting a workshop on the impact of the Stuyvesant Town decision on market-rate tenants who live in buildings that receive a J-51 tax abatement.
Some tenants in these buildings may be eligible for a rent reduction, a refund of the overcharged amount, and the rent and eviction protections that come with rent stabilization - if their apartment was illegally deregulated. This workshop will present the options available for tenants who are affected by this recent court ruling.
