Expect sunshine and rainbows!! The annual parade began in 1970 as a political stance to the Stonewall Riots and remains just as relevant today with gay marriage, the repeal of ‘Don’t ask, Don’t tell’ and debates over LGBT rights finally holding political power.  The march of extravagance makes its way down 5th Ave beginning at 34th street at 12pm and commences at the corner of Greenwich and Christopher Sts. Equality for all!!!


 

After more than an hour of contentious debate on the floor, the New York State Senate passed a key piece of legislation, sponsored by State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assembly Member Robin Schimminger, that would help the State Liquor Authority crack down on nightlife operators who routinely violate noise laws, fail to control unruly crowds and repeatedly draw police attention.

Opening Thursday June 20th, Maccarone Gallery is pleased to present “Flowers,” an exhibition of new paintings by Ann Craven. In her first solo exhibition at Maccarone Gallery, the artist undertakes a new subject, still-life arrangements of white roses. Painting with improvisational intensity, the artist uses primarily a palette of black and white, which reanimates the anachronistic genre of still-life flower-painting.

 


 

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced a major initiative to reduce the number of illegal knives on the streets of New York, following a large-scale investigation into the sale of illegal knives by local and national retailers doing business in New York. Despite the significant decrease in violent crime over the last decade, illegal knives are an increasingly serious problem in New York City and across the state.

 


Opening Sunday June 27th, Clifton Benevento presents the group exhibition Not Extractions, but Abstractions (Part 2).The work of six artists come together to evoke a contemporary mash-up of American artist Alexander Calder under his quote ‘Not Extractions but Abstractions’. Presented side-by-side their works obliquely summon Calder’s use of reductive forms, his serious yet playful endeavors with materials as well as his development of kinetic sculpture. Like any quirky mash-up, this assembly proposes new ideas and forms in transformative contrast to the original source. 


 

Kenaf, a fast-growing, non-invasive annual hibiscus plant related to cotton, okra and hemp, makes ideal paper fiber as well as great source material for burlap, clothing, canvas, particleboard and rope. Its primary use around the world today is for animal forage, but humans enjoy its high-protein seed oil to add a nutritious and flavorful kick to a wide range of foods.
