Take Action

AFA and Sloan Fine Art are pleased to present “Awakened,” a ten day exhibition and fundraising event, inspired by, and benefiting the pet companions that brighten all of our lives.  For this special exhibition, curator Alix Sloan has challenged over sixty artists to create works inspired by the powerful impact of animals in our lives and homes.  The cocktail reception for “Awakened” is Saturday, September 22nd from 5 to 8pm. 

The Special Olympics New York Junior Committee is at it again on August7th. Join them for another rousing cocktail benefit downtown, at Hotel Chantelle, to support the 56,000 athletes of Special Olympics New York. Drinks will be flowing and music will be pumping! Celebrate summer with us on the roof deck -- see you there!

Join QUEEROCRACY and Visual AIDS on Thursday, July 19th, as they facilitate a process of what it takes to create an action.  An emphasis will be placed on the communicative and community aspect of activism. The goal is to ensure that all those who want to participate in current AIDS activism can begin to find their place of empowerment within the ever-growing and multifaceted movement. 

Sal Polisi owns a wood carving shop at the foot of Pier 15.  Last year, Sal was told by the City (NYC Economic Development Corp.) that his shop would be relocated underneath the FDR Drive, in close proximity to its current location. Apparently this offer has been rescinded, and he is now facing eviction. The Seaport Committee of Community Board 1 will meet tonight, Tuesday, June 19th, and Sal’s plight will be on the agenda. Please come down and speak on Sal’s behalf, or just show your support by being present.
